How to Choose the Right Fishing Rod

Different fish and various conditions call for different types of rods. Before you go out and buy a rod,  think about what type of fishing you plan to do.

Guide to Selecting the Best Rod:

  1. Test the rod’s grip. Be sure the handle fits in your palm snugly.
  2. Pick the length. If you’re using light bait and fishing for perch or crappie, a 4.5 – 6 feet rod will work well. These lengths will also be good in brushy areas. Rods that are 6.5 feet and more work well for big bait, casting long distances, and rough fish like catfish or bass.
  3. Check for your rod’s flexibility. Hold the rod like you’re casting, then flip the end, and look at the tip for movement. Be sure and keep an ear out for any sound that may come from the pole.
  4. If worst comes to worst and you’re still not sure, seek help at your local or online sporting goods store. You can receive additional information about fishing rods from either of these places.
